California Avocado season has ended.

10 Easy Recipes for your Labor Day BBQ

Fresh California Avocado Turkey Mushroom Burger

As with all fruits and vegetables, wash avocados before cutting.
Check out our tips for how to choose and use California Avocados.

I love Labor Day - the idea of people all around the country celebrating the hard work and achievement of fellow citizens. I’m fortunate to have the day off and plan to enjoy the Southern California sunshine at the beach, followed by a BBQ with friends. The BBQ is a BYOM (bring your own meat) party, so I’m narrowing down recipes to grill and I’ll likely bring a salad or dessert to share, in addition to a snack for the beach. As I look for easy (less labor, the better) Labor Day recipes, I figured I’d share some favorites with you, below.

Labor Day Snacks

Avocado Caprese Salad, @createdbydianeThis Avocado Caprese Salad, Created by Diane, is a quick and easy recipe to whip up for a snack! I would use toothpicks and stack the California Avocado, Mozzarella, basil and tomato for a picnic-style finger-food.

Fresh California Avocado Pico de GalloIf I’m in the mood to switch things up from guacamole, I’ll likely make Fresh California Avocado Pico de Gallo Salsa and pick up a bag of tortilla chips. It requires a little chopping, but it’s ready in under 10 min – and it’s refreshingly delicious (my kind of snack!).

Salads to Share

Sensational Summer Salad with California AvocadosThis no-cook Sensational Summer Salad with California Avocados recipe from registered dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix is not only quick and easy to make, it is also crisp, creamy and delicious. I like the unexpected combination of beets and figs!

Strawberry Kale SaladI can’t resist a salad with both strawberries and California Avocados in it – like this Strawberry Kale Salad by Gimme Some Oven. The only modification I would make is to serve the goat cheese on the side for my dairy-free friends (it is already gluten free).

Grilling Ideas

Ultimate Fajita Burger with Fresh California Avocados

One of our Grand Prize All-American Recipe Contest winners this year, the Ultimate Fajita Burger, is a zesty twist to a typical cheeseburger. Just add the sliced bell peppers and onions to the grill when adding the burgers. Once the burgers and peppers are off the grill, pile on the toppings and enjoy!

Turkey Mushroom Burger with California AvocadoI’ve shared the California Avocado Turkey Mushroom Burger recipe with you in a blog post before – and I can’t get enough of the extra juiciness and umami flavor of the patty! Mushrooms are great in the patty as this recipe suggests, but if you’re short on time, pick up frozen turkey burgers and sauté the onions and mushrooms in a separate pan to top the burger.

California Avocado Guacamole Dog

This one is for my hot dog lovers out there! If a frank is your go-to for Labor Day grilling, try some Zesty California Guacamole on top for a whole new taste. Caution: the Fresno chiles give it an extra kick, but you can always modify based on your preference.

Grilled California Avocados

Regardless of your entrée, Grilled California Avocados are delicious and ready in minutes. I would classify them as a MUST-try. One point of clarification here: you’re only really grilling for a few minutes – to get the grill marks and to warm the avocado. Be careful not to burn them! If you have pico de gallo or salsa on hand, fill the center and you’re good to go!

Labor Day Desserts

Chocolate Chip Cookies with AvocadoChocolate chip cookies are always a crowd-pleaser and this recipe replaces some of the saturated fat with Fresh California Avocados. I get a ton of questions about baking with avocados and I think this recipe proves that it works – these cookies are out-of-this-world delicious! The general rule for baking with avocados as a substitution for butter is exchange equal parts butter for avocado. Either eliminate the butter altogether or reduce it by half. Either way works!

Grower John Scudder's California Summer Avocado PieThe California Summer Avocado Pie is one of our most popular desserts ever! California Avocado grower John Scudder has been making this creamy pie for over 25 years and graciously shared the recipe with us. It is quick to prepare, but remember to give yourself time to refrigerate it for 3-4 hours before serving. I’ll likely whip up this dessert recipe the day before Labor Day.

Are you as hungry as I am now? Note to self: don’t browse recipes on an empty stomach. Anyway, I hope this helps you narrow down your Labor Day menu. Do you have any Labor Day traditions? I’d love to hear what they are in the comments below.
