If you want your California Avocados to last just a little longer, try freezing them! Freezing avocados is easy, simply place whole (uncut) avocados in the freezer. Then thaw when needed and use immediately.

Ripe, fresh California Avocados are optimal for taste and texture – but when you find yourself with too many ripe avocados and don’t want them to go to waste, try freezing them for later. Freezing also is an option when California Avocado season, which is usually from spring through summer, is winding down and you want to stretch the time you get to enjoy this local favorite.

Here are a few tips on freezing avocados:

How to Freeze Mashed Avocados

Peel avocados, remove the seeds and mash to your preferred texture – we recommend slightly chunky. Stir in a little lemon juice.

Spoon the mashed avocados in zip tight, snack-size freezer safe bags, remove the air, seal and lay the bag flat in the freezer. You can place multiple bags in a larger freezer bag for extra protection if desired.

Alternatively, you can freeze mashed avocado in a reusable container, adding wax paper or plastic wrap directly on top of the avocado. Make sure to release any air pockets then add the lid. Frozen mashed avocados should be good anywhere from two weeks to a month, and are best used in dishes like avocado smoothies, avocado spread, avocado sauces and guacamole.

How to Freeze Whole Avocados (unpeeled)

Did you know that you could freeze avocados whole? You don’t need to wrap or treat the avocados before putting them in the freezer. When you’re ready to use, just take an avocado out of the freezer and let it thaw. Make sure to use it immediately once thawed as it can get mushy and turn brown if left for too long. Frozen whole avocados can last up to two weeks or even a month in the freezer.

How to Freeze Avocado Halves

Unless you have a food prep or vacuum sealing machine that pulls all the air out of the seal, we don’t recommend freezing avocado halves. The other two methods help protect the avocado better. If you do have a vacuum sealer, place peeled, seeded avocado halves that have been dipped in lemon juice in a vacuum freezer bag, remove the air and place flat in the freezer.
